Minister Madikizela Hands Over Homes In Saron, Drakenstein

26 February 2019

Minister Bonginkosi Madikizela recently handed over houses to residents of Saron, north of Wellington in the Drakenstein municipal area.

The Saron Individual Subsidy programme was adopted by the Department of Human Settlements as a pilot project which forms part of the Municipal Integrated Development Plan (IDP). It was regarded as the best practical option for a housing development of this nature to be implemented in this manner.

The project is also aimed at addressing unsuitable living conditions of approved housing beneficiaries living in informal structures in Saron.

The house handover forms part of the Department’s strategic goals to prioritise the most vulnerable residents, such as the elderly, for government housing opportunities.

Resident, Rachel Philander was overwhelmed with joy when she received the keys to her new house. She couldn’t thank the department and all officials enough.

Addressing the community, Minister Madikizela said people who are getting homes must understand that this is not just about handing over houses – it is about restoring dignity and making sure people own the property.

He commended the municipality for consistently delivery quality houses. “I want to thank all the officials from this municipality because we have seen an acceleration of housing delivery in this area.”

The Drakenstein Mayor, Conrad Poole, added that the community of Saron may have waited long for their homes, but they are glad to finally receive them.
