Minister To Handover Houses and Title Deeds To Farm Workers In Haarlem, George

1 August 2016

On Monday, 01 August, Western Cape Human Settlements Minister Bonginkosi Madikizela will handover 20 houses and 20 title deeds to farm workers and retired farm workers in Haarlem, George, Western Cape. Three beneficiaries are the elderly Mr Charlie Van Rooyen, Ms Gladys Smith and Mrs Dawid Hannies who has special needs. These houses are part of the Haarlem Farm Worker Housing Project.

This housing project is a ground-breaking initiative involving a partnership between government, the private sector and a developer. Planning and administration for the project was done by the developer and project manager in conjunction with consultants of no extra costs to the department.

This innovative project has the potential to be a blue print for how ordinary farm workers can be given title deeds to property and allow them to be free of the threat of farm evictions. The development has provided human settlement solutions to 20 fruit farm workers and their families.
