Media Alert: Western Cape Education Department Launches Safe Schools Youth Clubs

26 June 2011

On Monday, Minister Grant will be launching the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) Safe Schools youth cluster at Elsie's River High School.

The objectives of the youth clubs are to mobilise learners to actively participate in programmes that promote teaching and learning and a healthy lifestyle.

Information sessions and workshops will be arranged on topics such as drug abuse, gangsterism and violence. The youth clubs will also support the school in maintaining and promoting discipline.

Learners will participate in peer mediation, initiate youth dialogues and public speaking, drive campaigns, act as role models, and manage projects and programmes as alternatives to crime and violence in their school and the school community, such as sport or cultural activities.

The Minister will be addressing the learners, as well as signing a pledge.

Date: Monday, 27 March 2011
