Media Alert: Minister Grant to Open Reading Conference

28 June 2011

Hundreds of educators in the Western Cape are attending training programmes throughout the holiday period to improve their literacy and numeracy teaching skills.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has organised a variety of workshops as part of its ongoing strategy to improve literacy and numeracy performance in the province.

Workshops on leadership and management have also been included in the holiday training programme.

Teachers have responded enthusiastically to the programmes. On Thursday, Minister Grant will be addressing educators at the Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute.

He will be opening a reading conference for educators that teach in the intermediate stage and for senior phase teachers. A reading conference for over 600 educators in the foundation stage was held earlier this week. Over 450 educators have registered to attend the conference tomorrow, which will also continue on Friday.

Workshops at the conference will cover topics such as the use of reading to develop writing skills, how to encourage reluctant readers and the use of additional texts in teaching reading.
