Media Alert: Department Joins Hands with Community to Fight Against Violence Towards Children

6 October 2010

On Friday October 8, 2010 the Department of Social Development will be hosting a Door to Door Campaign in Kuyasa, Khayelitsha.

Sighting the recent incident, where little 4 year old Asenathi was brutally raped, and left for dead, the Department has committed itself to constantly raise awareness about the need for parents, caregivers, the community and community structures to care for and protect children, and to be vigilant at all times.

Statistics from the SAPS shows that Harare police station in Khayelitsha that covers the suburb of Kuyasa, had 127 reported cases of rape for the last 6 months. Although this data is not disaggregated by SAPS, the after hour service provided by the Khayelitsha social worker showed that for the period 1 April to 30 September 13 children were victims of rape and 3 children were victims of attempted rape in Kuyasa.

The aim of the door to door campaign is for department officials, to speak to communities regarding child protection, and to distribute information regarding the child protection services which the department offers.

MEC De Lille, will be attending the door to door community campaign, and will have an opportunity to engage with community members, in Kuyasa.

All media are invited, to join hands, and create the much needed awareness, as children are the most vulnerable group in society, and they deserve to be loved, and protected.
