Media alert: Audio/vibration signals to aid Blind and Deaf pedestrians at Intersections

13 October 2009

Blind and deaf pedestrians will benefit from a City of Cape Town decision to equip all new traffic signal road intersections with a vibrating button which emits an audio signal when it is safe to cross.

The, device, known as the Audio Tactile Pedestrian Detector, will be demonstrated during a ceremony in Salt River. Councillor Elizabeth Thompson, Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Roads and Stormwater, will officiate.

Date: Wednesday, 14 October

Time: 10:00 - 11:00

Venue: Outside the Cape Town Society for the Blind office, Salt River Road (pedestrian crossing) Salt River

All media are welcome to attend.

The device will aid blind and deaf pedestrians by providing both audio and tactile signals indicating that the pedestrian green man symbol is lit and that it is therefore safe for them to cross the road. The device will transmit an audible signal and will also vibrate when the pedestrian green man traffic light symbol is switched on.
