Marathon Links Central City to Townships

3 September 2006
The City of Cape Town in partnership with Mr Price Celtic Harriers, The Cape Argus, Cape Town Partnership as well as Top Form and Guguletu Athletics Clubs will be hosting the Cape Town Marathon on Sunday 10 September 2006. The event is a 42.2 km marathon starting at 06:00 from the Grand Parade and a 10 km Fun Run starting at 07:30. This event forms part of the City's Heritage Month celebrations.

The purpose of the marathon is to link the Central City to various townships through its people and its sport. The marathon route will take runners from the Central City through Woodstock, Thornton, Epping, Langa, Athlone, Rosebank, Mowbray and District Six.

Runners will be taken on a historical journey past various heritage sites including the 100 year old City Hall at the start, the oldest mosque in the Bo Kaap, The Owal, Melck House and Koopmans de Wet (two of the oldest buildings in the city centre), the Langa Pass Office and many other landmarks.

Registration for the marathon and the Fun Run has closed.
