Liesbeek Trail gets Facelift in City's Ward Allocations

The Liesbeek Trail along the southern suburbs is to be upgraded for R105 000 as part of the City Council's ward allocations for Subcouncil 20.

The five wards of Subcouncil 20 in the southern suburbs will receive some R2 million which will be evenly split between capital and operational projects.

The second biggest allocation of R100 000 will be used to hardstanding the verge along Howard Drive at the Meadowridge sports complex and the Sunny Skies pre-school in Ward 73 which covers Bergvliet, Diep River, Meadowridge and Plumstead.

Other projects in the ward include the upgrading of play parks, bollards along Kendal Road, a brick pathway at Die Oog for wheelchair and pram access as well as a flow monitor at Main Road, Diep River.

Ward 60 which spans Sybrand Park, Rondebosch East, Crawford, Kenwyn and Lansdowne will use R80 000 to upgrade play parks, R70 000 for greening the area under the Wetton bridge and a footpath and fence off Lansdowne Road bridge.

The play parks in Ward 58, consisting of Mowbray, Rosebank, Rondebosch, Claremont, Newlands, Kenilworth and Harfield Village will receive R50 000 for upgrading. Another R25 000 will go towards the upgrade of Rondebosch Common, R30 000 for the planting of trees across the ward, as well as R50 000 for the Durban and Campground Roads interchange.

Arderne Gardens in Claremont will get R24 000 for the installation of an irrigation system and electricity upgrade. Another R12 500 will be utilised for the installation of dipped curbs for wheelchairs across Ward 59 which covers Rondebosch and Newlands, and R50 000 for the upgrading of residential lighting.

Ward 62 which covers Plumstead, Southfield, Elfindale, Retreat and Wynberg, will get R40 000 for palisade fencing next to Plumstead station, R30 000 to upgrade Maynardville Park, and R30 000 for a fence between Springfield Convent and Wynberg Park.

The allocations for operational projects will be spent on buying material for libraries, street signage, tree planting, park maintenance, removal of graffiti, as well as the protection of the cultural landscape of the Constantia vineyards.
