Large crowd kicks off first Better Together Games in Eden

6 October 2014

The 2014 Better Together Games kicked off in the Eden region in Oudtshoorn with beautiful sunny weather on Friday, 3 October.

The Games saw a large number of regional staff participating, including members of the Oudtshoorn-based Infantry school. The sport ground was packed with more than 3000 participants. Sponsors Nedbank and Old Mutual did free wellness screenings for staff and Peninsula Beverages ensured that there were enough cool-drinks to cool participants off in the heat.

Phillip van Reenen from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) addressed the crowd, saying they have set the bar high for the other regions for these Better Together Games: “We want you to be able to say that you hosted the best Games this year”, he told the cheering crowd.

Councillor Magdaleen Titus from the Oudtshoorn municipality officially opened the Games. “It is wonderful to see such a big crowd here” she told the crowd and encouraged them to do their best.

The day started with the fun run and fun walk, whereafter participants competed in tug-of-war, netball, darts and many other sporting codes.

Mpumelo Ngozo from the Infantry school participated in the fun run and ended in the top 10. “This is the first time we are participating here and I am looking forward to coming back next year”, he said.

The next Better Together Games will take place on Friday, 10 October at Boland Park Sport Stadium in Worcester.
