Fire at Masiphumelele

A fire occurred at approximately 02:00 this morning within the Masiphumelele Informal Settlement, Fish Hoek. The fire razed 292 structures leaving 1076 people destitute (709 adults and 367 children).

Personnel of the City of Cape Town Disaster Risk Management Centre were deployed to assess the extent of the damage and disruption caused.

Emergency feeding, blankets and clothing are being provided to the fire victims. Building material will be issued by the Human Settlement Services for the victims to re-erect their structures.

The fire victims were provided with emergency shelter at the Masiphumelele Community Hall and the Methodist Church.

The cause of the fire is not known.

Residents are urged to never leave an open flame unattended. It can result in a disastrous fire that destroys homes, causes injuries or even deaths.
