City Guidelines for Property Boundaries Subject to Public Comment

12 August 2008
The City of Cape Town would like to assure the public that the proposed guidelines for walls and fences on property boundaries, as reported in the media, (following a Planning Portfolio Committee Meeting) will be subject to public comment, and the public's input will be fully taken into consideration.

The guidelines are still in the very early stages, and are likely to be adjusted considerably following public participation.

It must also be stressed that the proposed guidelines are not intended to affect existing boundary fences and walls.

Whatever form the final guidelines take, the City will not require people to change their existing walls or fences, or take down barbed wire, for example. They will only be used to guide approvals for future work on perimeter walls and fences.

Even then, builders and property owners will be able to apply for departure from the guidelines, subject to consultation with neighbours.
