City Confirms that it does not Cut Off Water Completely

2 April 2007
The City of Cape Town has confirmed that it does not disconnect water completely but merely restricts water to a trickle for ratepayers who are in arrears with their municipal accounts.

According to Cllr Lionel Roelf, Mayoral Committee Member for Utility Services, every household is entitled to six kilolitres of free water per month.

"As such, our water meters are designed to flow continuously even though it might be reduced to a trickle system until outstanding accounts are paid.

"Trickle water does create an inconvenience in that one cannot access any hot water. However it does allow one access to cold water at a rate of 20 litres per hour. It would thus take an hour to fill a bucket of water or ten hours to fill a bath of water, but it will never cut off completely," says Cllr Roelf.

Ratepayers who are up to date with their account payments but are experiencing problems with their water supply can contact City Water's 24 hour customer care number at 086-010-3054.

Should ratepayers with restricted water usage experience blockage or low water pressure problems they should contact the customer care number.

The City Council will respond immediately and dispatch someone to attend to the problem which could be caused by blockages in the water mains or low pressure in certain areas.
