City of Cape Town Observes Transport Month

In April 2005, the Transport Lekgotla, attended by the Transport Minister, MEC's and HOD's, resolved that from then on, October would be observed as Public Transport Month. The purpose was to highlight the importance of public transport, road safety and the challenges of making the transport system more efficient and effective.

"The City of Cape Town has embraced this initiative from its inception and this year is no different. During October 2007 our Transport Department will focus on four events/initiatives," says Councillor Elizabeth Thompson, Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Roads and Stormwater.

This is the recently completed stretch of road between the N2 and Stellenbosch Arterial. Phase 2 will involve changing the road from a single lane to one with multiple lanes in both directions, constructing a median strip to separate the traffic travelling in opposite directions and erecting a new bridge over the N2.

This centre was established in 1997 and provides a range of transport information e.g timetables for Metrorail and Golden Arrow. It is a 24-hour, 7 days a week service on a toll free number 0800 65 64 63 and currently receives around 120 000 calls per month. Through a national grant we were able to refurbish the centre and relocated it to the Paul Sauer building. It has the latest in telephony and computer equipment to ensure a first class service.

Park-n-Ride is an initiative identified in our Travel Demand Management Strategy. This strategy aims to alleviate congestion by providing opportunities to commuters to shift to more sustainable transport modes. The Helderberg project is a pilot project supporting this strategy.

On 31 October 2007, the Transport Department will have an open day on the Concourse Level of the Civic Centre where everyone can acquaint themselves with what the City's Transport Department is all about.

"Over and above these events/initiatives we are also assisting in projects such as the Khayelitsha Cycle Race", Councillor Thompson said.
