2010 Brings Along With It a Lasting Legacy

22 June 2010

The Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs, Sport and Recreation, Mr. Sakkie Jenner says 2010 should be remembered and embraced for the legacy it is leaving behind for the people of this country.

'Over the past few months, the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has embarked on a number of legacy programmes which will remain for the people of this province beyond 2010,' says Jenner.

'These are infrastructural upgrades which can be used way after the final whistle has been blown at the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup.'

'In terms of sport, the Department has established a partnership between the Dutch Group, "Stars in their eyes" which is a football training programme aimed at training soccer coaches from across the province and linking these communities and football clubs with local clubs, with the intention of improving the level of soccer coaching,' Jenner adds.

'We have further, as part of the legacy, launched the FOOTCLIC project which aims to promote the development of sport writers, in conjunction with the French Province of Burgundy.'

'DCAS has also acquired 5 count-down clocks, which were given to municipalities ahead of the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup, and are to be used by them after the World Cup, as public announcement tools.'

Furthermore the Fanjol concept will certainly not die at the end of the tournament, as a mobile LED screen purchased by the department, will not only be used to promote Mass Participation in sport but also strategically to give communities access to major national and international sporting events.'

According to Jenner, 'what is important to remember is that the development of skills, in terms of sport and culture is of utmost importance to this Department. Through these initiatives we have ensured that a positive social legacy, which enhances social cohesion and our capacity to deliver future high calibre sporting events is left behind for our people.'
