The City of Cape Town is doing its utmost to ensure that residents are afforded the opportunity to mourn the loss of former president Nelson Mandela in a dignified manner.
In order to do this, the City has staff on high alert to accommodate the mourners who are seeking solace in public areas. During this time, City law enforcement services will ensure that residents are safe; the Solid Waste Management Department will keep Cape Town clean; and the Transport Department will do all that it can to accommodate commuters.
Crowds of mourners have already started gathering at the Grand Parade in the CBD, which will also play host to an inter-faith service this afternoon. In order to accommodate mourners, the City will be implementing some immediate road closures in the area. Any unauthorised vehicles parked in the immediate vicinity, i.e. Darling Street, Corporation Street, etc. will be required to move.
It is anticipated that the Grand Parade will serve as a gathering space during this period of mourning and the relevant roads will be closed during this time. The roads listed below will be temporarily closed and/or restricted to vehicular traffic. This will have an impact on traffic flow and motorists are asked to please plan their trips accordingly.
