The Western Cape Government and Safely Home launched the "Safely Home Road Safety Reward" campaign on 17 December 2012. The campaign is aimed at rewarding motorists for good behaviour on our roads over this festive season.
"The Province will be offering a cash opportunity to vehicle owners and drivers who remain fine-free over the festive season," said Robin Carlisle, Minister of Transport and Public Works.
"Two cash prizes of R25 000 will be rewarded to qualifying drivers, drawn at random, from motorists with their vehicles registered in the province.
“All motorists in the province are automatically entered into the draw, and winners will be drawn from those who meet set criteria and ensure that their details on the National Traffic Information System (eNaTiS) are correct and up to date," added Minister Carlisle.
The initiative is part of a behavioural economics technique aimed at establishing a culture of obeying road rules by promoting an identity of responsible road users.
"This reward is aimed at the very many drivers in the province who are responsible, who obey the rules of the road religiously, and make the informed decisions that save lives whenever they take to the roads. Together with these responsible citizens, we have managed to reduce the fatalities in the province by 28%, and will continue to work hard to reach our collective goal of halving road deaths by the end of 2014.
"The type of driving which we want to discourage was amply displayed by Mr Katleho Mosoeu of Maseru, Lesotho, who was arrested for driving a grey Mercedes Benz at 146 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the Laingsburg – Leeu Gamka stretch of road on Friday, 14 December. The arrest was made by Mr Mark February, our Prince Albert Traffic Chief. This reckless and irresponsible driver was travelling with his wife and child in the vehicle," added Minister Carlisle.
There will be two draws to determine the winners, one on 24 December 2012 and the other very early in 2013.
All motorists in the Province are automatically entered into the draw, but in order to stay eligible for the prize, they must ensure that they:

"Road safety is a key priority of Safely Home and the Western Cape Government. You are three times more likely to run into an enforcement officer on our roads this festive season. We will continue to do all that we can to ensure safety on our roads this festive season. However road users, particularly motorists, have the largest role to play," added Minister Carlisle.
