Operation Vala Closes the Roads for 40 Drunk Drivers
Only four drunk drivers were arrested at the other nine similar road blocks across the Western Cape.
During the integrated operation that lasted into the early hours of Saturday morning, 2301 vehicles were stopped, while 563 were searched.
Breathalysers were used on 607 drivers, while 375 fines were issued for traffic violations.
Max said that all road users in the Western Cape must become used to daily road blocks and vehicle checkpoints on the Province's roads until an acceptable level of driver conduct will be reached.
We will not allow any vehicle driver to place the lives of any road user at risk. Drunken driving will not be tolerated and transgressors will face the full force of the law and be prosecuted accordingly.
Provincial Traffic is committed to their running Integrated Summer Operational Programme, of which the objectives are to minimise road trauma, accidents, injuries and fatalities through a heightened awareness.
Operation Vala is aligned to Provincial Traffic's Integrated Summer Operational Programme and part of the safely home campaign by the Western Cape Government, to ensure the safety of all road users.
(*Vala is an IsiXhosa verb meaning "to close" and through this operation, Traffic want to close all avenues for road traffic offenders and law breakers.)
