Neurosurgical High Care Improves at Groote Schuur Hospital
The Neurosurgical High Care area at Groote Schuur Hospital has been moved to ward D13. High Care provides service for patients with single organ failure who require intensive monitoring. Neurosurgical High Care beds were located in Ward F7 and although we call them a high care the service we offered in the past did not meet the criteria of high care. Except for increased nursing observation there was no monitoring available (equipment) that is required to take appropriate care of patients who require more advanced organ support and monitoring.
With the move to D13, six (6) beds offers intensive monitoring for patients with brain injuries/conditions. This facility can be used as a step down from Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or as a facility for patients who except for intensive monitoring do not require ventilation. We believe that through this appropriately equipped high care we will increase Neuro-Critical Care Capacity as well as optimise use of ICU beds. The High Care ward is equipped with advanced cardiac monitoring and fluid administration systems.
