Rain does not dampen spirits at Metro Better Together Games

28 October 2019

Heavy rain could not deter Western Cape Government staff from all the provincial departments who came out to participate in the Metro Better Together Games on Friday, 25 October 2019.

The Games, hosted at Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch this year by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and partners Old Mutual, Nedbank and Peninsula Beverages, offer all Provincial Government staff the opportunity to compete against each other in a variety of sporting codes. The aim of the day is to encourage staff to live healthy, active lifestyles, while also fostering a culture of friendly competition between departments.

Due to the heavy rain showers that started early in the morning, all the outdoor sporting codes had to be cancelled as all the playing fields became waterlogged. DCAS HOD Brent Walters opened the morning by encouraging staff to still enjoy the day and participate in the indoor activities, which included health screenings by Old Mutual. Minister Anroux Marais also thanked staff members who showed up despite the rain and also to still make the most of the day.

The Danie Craven hall was used to continue with chess, klawerjas and dominoes, and darts were also played in another venue. However, the staff present still came up with different ways to participate, including an impromptu group dancing activity. The day continued in a good spirit and staff members could still enjoy competing against other departments.

DCAS encourages all Western Cape Government staff to continue living active lifestyles to benefit their health for years to come.
