Dams show slight increase

The dams in the Western Cape continue to show a slight increase in levels. Currently the average level for dams across the province stands at 37% (2018: 36.3%). The City of Cape Town’s dams are on average 49.8% full.

The Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, says the recent weekend’s rainfall will continue to have an impact over the coming weeks as water continues to flow to the dams from catchment areas.

“Several reports of damage and localised flooding was reported in the province over the past weekend including a large rockfall on the Franschhoek Pass, but overall we got off relatively lightly. We are expecting further cold and wet weather in the days and weeks to come and urge the public to take precautions where possible.”

The minister has urged continued water responsibility in the months to come.

“We must use water wisely even when there’s more of it. The system needs to recover as far as possible in the months ahead.”

Voëlvlei dam – 57% full this week (2018: 55%. Last week: 38%)

Bergriver Dam 75.3% full this week (2018: 67%. Last week: 72.9%).

Theewaterskloof dam – 41.4% full this week (2018: 29.8%. Last week: 40.3%)

Clanwilliam Dam 13.3%. (2018: 57%. Last week: 12.6%)
