EMS Responds to Four Major Motor Vehicle Accidents
The Western Cape Government Health: Emergency Medical Services responded to various accidents last night and in the early hours of the morning.
Tuesday, 20 December 2011:
18:30 - R27 near Big Bay Boulevard turn-off - In an accident involving a taxi, the vehicle was found on its roof and three adults - two males and a female which included the driver of the vehicle - were declared dead on arrival. There were nine patients of which three were coded critical by paramedics as they sustained severe injuries to the abdomen, head, pelvic and lower legs. EMS, ER24 and Netcare transported patients to Groote Schuur, New Somerset, Tygerberg and Wesfleur hospitals and Milnerton Medi-Clinic.
Wednesday, 21 December 2011:
02:47 - 37 km outside of Beaufort West, direction Cape Town - Two vehicles collided, causing the death of two adult males and severe injuries to six patients who had to be removed from the vehicle by EMS Rescue Technicians using the Jaws of Life.
- Two adults - male and female - sustained severe pelvic and lower leg injuries.
- Two adult males and two children - a boy and a girl - sustained minor to serious injuries.
All patients were transported to Beaufort West Hospital by EMS land ambulance.
03:33 - 5 km outside of Prince Albert, direction Lainsberg - In a head-on collision between a minibus and car, emergency medical personnel attended to 26 patients of which five were declared dead on arrival, seven suffered multiple trauma to the body and 14 sustained minor to serious injuries of bruises, lacerations and abrasions. EMS Rescue Technicians removed some of the patients from the vehicles using the Jaws of Life. Survivors of the accident were transported to Prince Albert and Lainsberg hospitals.
- Four adults and one child declared dead on arrival.
- Seven adults were coded critical after sustaining multiple fractures.
- Fourteen adults sustained minor to serious injuries.
The AMS fixed-wing aircraft is currently airlifting one of the critical patients to a health facility in Cape Town.
03:50 - 3 km outside of Heidelberg, N2 direction Riversdale - After a car rolled, six patients had to be attended by emergency medical practitioners. One male child was coded critical after he suffered a severe injury to the head. Three adults and two children sustained minor to serious fractures. All patients were transported by EMS ambulance to Riversdale Hospital. No extrication was required.
