Premier Zille to Address Council on Skills

2 May 2018

Today, 2 May 2018, Premier Helen Zille will address the Premier’s Council on Skills engagement, hosted at the Cape Town College, in Crawford.

The Premier’s Council on Skills was established in 2011 and includes representatives from government, learning institutions and business. The purpose of this council is to ensure that all skills development role players within the province gather in one space to discuss areas of potential economic growth and how to develop the skills required to meet this demand.

The Premier will be providing an update on the three youth-focused Game Changers: Afterschool, eLearning and Apprenticeships. Various stakeholders will be present including business owners/employers, principals and educators from Technical High Schools and Maths and Science Schools and representatives from the TVET Colleges.

A key emphasis will be placed on the Apprenticeship Game Changer which aims to introduce just over 11 300 qualified apprentices into the labour market within our five priority sectors: Tourism, Agri-processing, Oil and Gas, ICT and Renewable Energy by 2019.

The Premier will provide a progress update on the Apprenticeship Game Changer and will also focus on the importance of fostering strong partnerships between employers, Technical High Schools, Maths and Science Schools and TVET Colleges in order to grow the skills we need in the province and bring down youth unemployment.

She will be joined by Minister of Economic Opportunities Alan Winde, and Minister of Education Debbie Schäfer, who will also address the council.

There will also be an opportunity for interviews and photographs for members of the media.

All media are invited to attend.
