After 15 months of construction, the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) and Western Cape Education Department (WCED) are proud to announce that the new R71 million primary school in Tulbagh reached practical completion today, 8 December 2016.
About 400 learners are expected to benefit when it opens its doors in January 2017, and a larger number in 2018.
The school is within walking distance of the growing community. Most of the school buildings comprise a framed concrete structure. Borehole water will be used to irrigate the sports field, and energy saving lamps have been installed throughout the complex.
Teaching facilities comprise 28 standard classrooms, two double Grade R classrooms, two multi-media classrooms, and one science laboratory room. The complex also has a hall with toilet facilities, an administrative building, and caretaker’s facilities.
DTPW is committed to creating short-term Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) employment and skills training opportunities. The project exceeded its empowerment and employment targets, with R9 million spent on targeted enterprises, and R4,6 million on local labour from the Witzenberg municipal area.
The Western Cape Government invests heavily in education infrastructure to improve the quality of teaching and learning, as well as to meet the increasing demand for schooling in the province.
We are pleased to have delivered a school that Tulbagh residents can be proud of; a place where quality education can take place and learners can grow.
