Thirteen people, six of them pedestrians, died on Western Cape roads this past weekend. Forty two drivers were arrested for alleged drunken driving.
Traffic officials conducted 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape on 1 and 2 May 2015. Those officials stopped and inspected 1 883 vehicles as part of Provincial Traffic services safety campaign.
A total of 1 499 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 42 arrests.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Oudtshoorn at 1.11 mg/1 000 ml, which was four times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000ml.
A total of 2 849 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 610 speeding offences were recorded. One hundred and fifty nine (159) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 191 750, 00.
