The Western Cape Government Remembers Mandela

5 December 2014
Nelson Mandela tribute Statement by the Western Cape Government

Today, as we commemorate the one year anniversary of his death, the Western Cape Government will pay tribute to Madiba and honour his legacy with evening laser projections of his face on Table Mountain. The Tribute Laser Display will run on 5 and 6 December 2014. Members of the public are advised that visibility is best from 21:00 and the projection will be switched off at midnight.

Table Mountain is not only one of the seven Natural Wonders of the World, but it was also a significant landmark for Nelson Mandela during his imprisonment on Robben Island. In his words, “During the many years of incarceration on Robben Island, we often looked across Table Bay at the magnificent silhouette of Table Mountain. To us on Robben Island, Table Mountain was a beacon of hope. It represented the mainland to which we would one day return.”

The laser image will be projected from Table Mountain road and the projection site is unfortunately not open to the public.

However a visit to the site can be arranged for the media from 20:00 but would require identification as media in order to gain access. Kindly send media requests to Mushfieqah Salie (Mushfieqah.Salie@westerncape.gov.za) with mobile and e-mail contact details to arrange access and get further information.

Logistical assistance for the Tribute Laser Display is being provided by:

  • SANParks;
  • City of Cape Town; and
  • Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) is ensuring air space clearance.

Nelson Mandela tribute Messages of tribute can be posted online at

http://www.westerncape.gov.za/madiba. Just click on the carousel of photos of Madiba at the top of the page, and click on the tab on the right that says "Leave your tribute message".

Furthermore, special dignitaries and well-known personalities, including Premier Helen Zille, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and Former President FW De Klerk, among others share their thoughts on the life and legacy of former president Nelson Mandela. In keeping with the symbolism of the number 67, the duration of the video is exactly 6 minutes and 7 seconds.
