This weekend’s 24 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 1 937 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services Safety Campaign.
Six hundred and ninety-three drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 16 arrests.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Knysna at 1.26 mg/1000 ml, which was four times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1000 ml.
Thirty-seven vehicles were manually screened for speeding of which 37 speeding offences were recorded.
Two hundred and four fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R148 000.00.
