State of Health in the Province - 5 Years Later

28 February 2014

The Western Cape Minister of Health, Mr Theuns Botha, and the Head of Health, Professor Craig Househam, held a media briefing on Thursday, 27 February 2014 at the Khayelitsha Hospital to announce the Western Cape Government Health milestones since 2009 with the following themes:

  • Mapping the strategic objective to “Create Wellness”.
  • Expanding health infrastructure to redress past inequalities.
  • Strengthening our Health EMS.
  • Bringing the private sector on board.

Major causes of death in the Western Cape, service pressures for hospitals, service outputs e.g. how many patients are treated annually, the amount of chronic medication dispensed, condom distribution and total clients on ARV’s etc. are but a few of the discussion points provided in this report.

Some interesting facts like the Western Cape Province has the highest life expectancy rate for both male and females in the country and cervical cancer screening coverage increased from 40% in 2009/2010 to 55.0% in 2012/2013.
