US Agency to Support Rooftop Solar Plans for Western Cape Government

10 September 2013

On 11 September 2013, the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) will sign a grant with the Green Cape Sector Development Agency NPC (Green Cape), serving on behalf of the Western Cape Government’s (WCG) Department of Transport and Public Works. This grant will be used to evaluate the technical and financial feasibility of implementing a large-scale rooftop solar photovoltaic project for the generation of renewable energy for WCG’s use in its buildings situated in Cape Town’s central business district.

The grant will fund a review of the Western Cape’s solar irradiation, the WCG’s electricity needs, and solar photovoltaic and energy storage technologies. It will develop a conceptual design for the project and financing options.

Erica Barks-Ruggles, Cape Town’s US Consulate General and Francois du Plessis, Green Cape CEO will sign the agreement. Robin Carlisle, Minister of Transport and Public Works will witness the signing.

The event will be held at the US Consulate General in Cape Town and will be open to the media.
