The Western Cape Disaster Management Centre has received a giant boost to its provincial Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) management capability.

Thanks to a generous donation from petroleum giant Sasol, several rural district municipalities across the Western Cape will now be outfitted with modern Hazmat equipment.

“The areas that are benefitting are situated on strategic routes around the province, routes that are at risk of potential hazmat spillages. Therefore the donation is of huge value to prevent and address potential disaster situations should they arise,” said the Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell.

Bredell says the municipalities benefitting at this stage are Overberg District Municipality and the Central Karoo District Municipality.

Colin Deiner, head of the WCDMC, hosted a Sasol delegation at the head offices of the WCDMC this afternoon where a memorandum of understanding was also signed by the parties involved.

“This is a great venture for Sasol, the Western Cape Government and the two district municipalities. We value the partnership of the private sector when it comes to expensive and vital matters like disaster management and we thank Sasol for their generous donation,” Deiner said.
