17 February 2020
Some of the Western Cape’s brightest young stage talents are a step closer to performing at the Zabalaza Festival and the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK) after taking part in the Cape Winelands Drama Festival in Franschhoek on Saturday 15 February 2020.

The event was hosted by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in collaboration with the Stellenbosch Municipality, Cape Winelands District Municipality, the Baxter Theatre and the Zabalaza Festival.

The Cape Winelands Drama Festival featured seven drama groups from Mbekweni, Zwelethemba, Worcester, Bonnievale and Franschhoek. The groups competed for prizes and a place in the grand finale.

Adjudicators included award-winning actor Abduraghman Adams (Suidooster and Melody), Khanya Viljoen and Mdu Kweyama from the Baxter’s Zabalaza Festival.

Our Hope Drama Group was announced as the overall winner, with Franschhoek High as runner-up and Bonnievale Culture Project taking third place.

All three groups qualified for the grand finale that will take place in April. The other award winners were:
  • Best Ensemble: Bonnievale Culture Project
  • Best Director: Randel Kleinbooi
  • Best Writer: Charnelle Fortuin
  • Best Supporting Actor: Sihle Williams
  • Best Supporting Actress: Lu-Ann Swanepoel
  • Best Actor: Vuyolwethu Tanga
  • Best Actress: Annique Sias

  • Best Production Winner: Our Hope Drama Group
The overall winners will get the opportunity to showcase their talents at the main Zabalaza Festival as well as at the Suidoosterfees Jongsterre initiative, the KKNK and the Vrystaat Kunstefees.

Anroux Marais, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, praised the young performers for steering clear of social ills and for using their time constructively.

DCAS and its partners aim to develop the arts through festivals and by providing talented young people with different opportunities. BETTER TOGETHER.
