Western Cape Archives host art exhibition by Jeannette Unite

11 December 2017

The Minister of the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais officially opened an art exhibition by renowned South African Artist Jeannette Unite titled “Complicit Geographies – The Mineral Revolution” on 7 December 2017. The art is currently on display in the historic Old Guard Rooms in the Old Gaol Building at the Western Cape Archive and Record Service in Roeland Street Cape Town.

This exhibition is hosted by the Archives as part of the successful ongoing relationship between the Archives and the artist. “With this selection of paintings I have incorporated slimes dam, smelter, oxides and mine dump detritus from my travels across the world, along with texts from archives and scientific journals,” says Jeannette.

Through her work Jeannette aims to show the versatility of minerals and how mining touches all aspects of our everyday lives, making all of us complicit in the destruction of the Earth. Her process of art is to transform minerals into things of beauty, intrigue and value. This is to encourage people to see the beauty of minerals in her work and start challenging others to think about how mining can be done in a fair and sustainable way.

During the opening Minister Marais said that she welcomes Jeannette’s exhibition as it references our mining and social history and that awareness around this should be encouraged.

The exhibition is open to the public and may be viewed at the Western Cape Archives and Records Service at 72 Roeland Street Cape Town. Click here for the opening hours.

DCAS aims to develop the arts through these exhibitions and to build a creative Western Cape, BETTER TOGETHER.
