Media Release: Provincial Sport Awards celebrate excellence in sport
Each year since 1996, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) has proudly celebrated the outstanding achievements of committed Western Cape sportspeople in a variety of categories at the annual Sport Awards.
On Saturday, 16 September 2017, Minister Anroux Marais hosted the 2017 Western Cape Sport Awards Ceremony at the Century City Conference Centre. During the keynote address, Minister Marais said, “What better way is there to show the world and others how proud we are of where we come from, and where we’re headed, than through developing and showcasing South African sporting excellence? Sporting events are the single most prominent events broadcast worldwide, with the biggest global audience. Never forget that in your own ways you have the power to change the global perception of not only South Africa but of your communities through your sporting finesse”.
Regional nominations are made by the provincial sports federations, sport councils and other interested parties. A panel of experts selects the winners. The finest athletes, coaches and administrators receive awards at the Regional Sports Awards and the best achievers at regional level qualify in the running for top honours at the Sport Awards in the Western Cape.
Provincial winners may be nominated for the annual national Sport Awards hosted by the national Department of Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA). This prestigious ceremony honours South African sportspeople for their efforts in local and international competitions.
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport recognises the sporting achievements of our sportspeople. Let us continue to encourage them to achieve new heights and to build an active province BETTER TOGETHER.
