Summer school holiday activities

kids running

A number of programmes will run across the province during the school holiday. Children will be able to enjoy their days away from the classroom in a safe space.

Visit our MOD centres

The Mass participation; Opportunity and access; Development and growth (MOD) programme is run by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), provides sport and recreational activities to over 40 000 youths in disadvantaged areas and communities. They make sure that children are provided with fun educational activities that develop their skills and interests.

During the December school holiday, the MOD centres will offer a number of activities, ranging from sports activities to life skills programmes.

We encourage the youth to attend the holiday programmes at their nearest MOD centre to learn and be active in a safe environment. For more information, please email DCAS.Com@westerncape.gov.za  or call 021 483 9877.

Holiday and leisure time reading guide

As parents, you can play a key role in building the reading and writing skills of your children by encouraging them to read during school holidays and after school hours. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has prepared reading lists to guide you on book selection at local libraries and when buying books for your children.

All you have to do is to copy and paste the name of the book into the search bar of the EDULIS Library Online Catalogue and select your local library from the drop-down list. The search result will tell you whether the library has the book, how many copies they have, and whether or not they're available.

You can view the reading lists below:

Sharing a love for books at our libraries

There are many exciting activities taking place at our provincial libraries this holiday. These programmes aim to create a safe environment for children to learn and play. You can contact your local library for more information about these holiday programmes.

Most local libraries stock the latest and most sought-after books, DVDs and CDs. Check in at your local library and connect with the world. For more information, please email capelib@westerncape.gov.za or call 021 483 2273.

Museums collections make connections

Why not plan a trip to your nearest museum?  The museums in our province develop and promote collections, exhibitions and programmes to educate visitors. Our educational programmes at museums help learners to benefit from the many resources at our disposal.  We mount exhibitions linked to significant events.  You might need to make a booking for some events and may need to pay a small fee to enter.

There are many non-profit organisations (NPO) that need help during the holidays. Volunteering is perfect for older youths and provides an opportunity to gain new skills. Find an NPO near you, and grab the opportunity to encourage your children to help underprivileged people in your community.

The aim of all of these programmes and activities are to positively engage, entertain and safeguard our youth during school holidays when they’re at greater risk for exposure to peer pressure, substance abuse, drugs, and violence.

We encourage all children to attend some of the holiday programmes, to learn and be active in a safe environment.
