The regional Sports Awards are a highlight on the calendar of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS). These regional ceremonies recognised and officially acknowledged the esteemed excellence of sportspeople hailing from the Western Cape.

As a cultural rite of passage, male initiation illustrates the transition from boyhood to manhood. There are two seasons in the Western Cape for this noble tradition.  Each year winter initiation takes place from May to July and the summer season is from November to January.

The Western Cape Acknowledges Sport Legends

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) is proud to acknowledge and honour legends, heroes and icons who have made a significant contribution to the development, transformation and growth of sport in South Africa and, more specifically, in the Western Cape.

The Sport Legends Awards was introduced in 2005 and hosted annually until 2018. Sport Legends from previous years are as follows:

The Draft National Sport plan has been released by the South African Sport and Recreation Department. The Draft Plan has been released countrywide for comments by sport bodies and the general public.

On Friday, 15 February, Premier Helen Zille delivered her last State of the Province Address at the Western Cape Provincial Parliament.

Temperatures in the Western Cape can rise to dangerous levels and everyone should be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Babies and the elderly are particularly at risk as are people working or exercising in a hot environment. People using chronic medication need to drink extra water during heat waves to ensure that their kidneys are not further stressed.

With the Easter weekend and school holidays upon us, we urge all citizens to stay safe and be responsible on our roads. 

Staying in the sun for longer periods of time can cause sunburn and if you’re not properly hydrated, you can suffer from heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

We have a few tips to keep you and your family hydrated and protected from the sun during the hot summer months. With the start of school holidays, it’s also important for your children to be made aware of the dangers that too much sun exposure can cause.

What is a Stroke?
A stroke occurs when blood vessels carrying oxygen and nutrients to part of the brain suddenly becomes blocked or bursts. When this happens, part of the brain can’t get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so the affected brain cells die.
