Weekly road safety report: 17 - 23 January 2018

Good news as Forensic Pathology Services data indicates a 4,3% drop in Western Cape road traffic fatalities in 2017 compared to the previous year.

According to Farrel Payne, Director: Provincial Traffic Services, improvements in integrated planning are most likely behind this positive news.

“The commitment shown across the board from all law enforcement agencies, including municipalities and the SAPS has been exceptional. Our strengthened partnerships with SANRAL, Safely Home and engineering colleagues across the province are clearly bearing fruit,” he said.

A total of 1 315 verified road traffic incident fatalities were recorded by Forensic Pathology Services, marking a 4,3% decrease on 2016 when 1 374 people were killed.

More good news is that this week’s weekend death toll was one of the lowest on record. Five people were killed on Western Cape roads over the weekend, compared to an average of 15 fatalities every weekend in 2017.

“We remind the public that increases in road crashes coincide with payday weekends. This weekend, road users are asked to please exercise caution, including pedestrians. If you’re planning on drinking, please don’t drive. If you’re planning on driving, please don’t drink,” added Director Payne.
