WC Minister of Health officially opens the upgraded Vredenburg Hospital

On Monday, 18 March 2019, The Western Cape Health Minister, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo officially opened the newly upgraded, state of the art Vredenburg Hospital in the Saldanha Municipality. This facility is one of several in the West Coast District that received upgrades over the past two years, including Louwville, Langebaan, Velddrif, Porterville and Clanwilliam.

This newly upgraded hospital, gives effect to the healthcare 2030 aim of providing high-quality health facilities at district hospital level. The upgrades to Vredenburg Hospital forms part of a revitalisation process to improve the infrastructure and service delivery to this community.

Vredenburg Hospital serves a growing population and upgrades were done in phases. This is now concluded at cost of over R172 million.

“It is important for us a government to ensure that the healthcare package offered in our facility suits the need of our communities, we constantly have to expand our services. The upgrade to the Vredenburg Hospital is in direct response to the community’s needs, and that is why we pride ourselves in what we offer our patients. We continuously strive to offer the best services to all our clients in the best possible facilities” said Minister Mbombo

The upgrades include:

Facilities for patients: Theatre unit, Paediatrics unit, Rehabilitation unit, Psychiatric unit

Administrative or servicing functions: Administration unit, Procurement unit, Admissions unit, Laboratory

Hospital services: Kitchen, Workshop, Refuse, Mortuary, and Electrical & Mechanical plant rooms

“Yes, we are under enormous pressure in terms of our finances, we dealt with a  drought and water crisis, our aging infrastructure, unfunded mandates and statutory requirements, to name a few, but we are here today because we listened to the people of Vredenburg. We are giving you an upgraded hospital, with better services and a state of the art facility, which you can be proud of. This is the community’s asset, I hope the people of Vredenburg takes pride in it and treasures this asset. To our staff, thank you for all your hardwork and I hope that you will continue serve the community with passion and dedication.” said Minister Mbombo
