Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, has welcomed the conviction of Racquel “Kelly” Smith, Jacquen Appollis and Steveno Van Rhyn for the kidnapping and trafficking of Joshlin Smith.

Joshlin Smith, the daughter of Racquel Smith, disappeared in February last year. Her disappearance caused widespread anger. It was the prosecution’s case that the accused, with Kelly being the mastermind, trafficked Joshlin. Central to the state’s case was the testimony of Laurentia Lombaard, who turned state witness after initially being charged as accused number 4 in the matter.

Although the guilty verdict brings some justice for Joshlin, her whereabouts are still unknown. This case places the spotlight firmly on human trafficking in South Africa. “We need to drastically improve our understanding and awareness of human trafficking, as well as efforts to prevent and combat this scourge,” said Minister Marais.

She added, “I want to thank the police investigation team and prosecution for their meticulous work and dedication to bringing those responsible for this little girl’s disappearance to justice. I hope this conviction sends out a clear message that our justice system will deal decisively with those who exploit vulnerable people, particularly children. I urge authorities to continue with their efforts to find little Joshlin and bring her home.”
