WC Government congratulates Banyana Banyana on historic WAFCON win

24 July 2022

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport congratulates Banyana Banyana on their first time win at the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON). This is the first time that the team has won this cup and it is another exciting step in their journey to next year’s FIFA World Cup.

This team has grown from strength to strength, having qualified for the World Cup earlier this month and with Coach Ellis being awarded Coach of the Year last week at the CAF Awards last week.

Head of Department Guy Redman said: “We are very excited to see how this team is performing. Through this historic first win, they are raising the profile of women’s football in our country and bringing renewed hope and excitement to girls and women.”

Minister Anroux Marais said: “Congratulations to the Banyana Banyana team who have faced many challenges in their professional football careers but who have done so well. It is through teams such as these that we show young girls how far they can go in sport. We are excited to keep supporting this team as they build up to next year and we would love to see them bringing the World Cup home!”
