On 12 and 13 September, Provincial Traffic Services held 22 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape as part of its safety campaign. A total of 2 383 vehicles were stopped.
A total of 1 542 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 22 arrests.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Oudtshoorn at 1.26 mg/1 000 ml which was five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000ml.
A total of 10 586 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 1 245 speeding offences were recorded.
The 266 fines issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness amounted to R309 400.
