Western Cape Government Health Minister Dr Nomafrench Mbombo joined hands with community healthcare workers to launch a door-to-door campaign and visited a local mall to register elderly community members on the Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS) as the province gears up for phase two of the vaccine rollout.
The two-day campaign in Cape Town aimed to assist elderly residents with registration for the COVID-19 vaccine. Residents from a local farming community in Durbanville were also able to receive support during the awareness drive.
Minister Mbombo engaged various elderly residents and has encouraged the public to register their loved ones for vaccination.
“I encourage all residents to register on the Electronic Vaccine Data System. If your loved one or someone you know needs support, please help them to register. You are also welcome to visit your nearest community healthcare centre or engage your local community healthcare worker to get information on vaccination. We thank all our healthcare workers who have undertaken the vaccination drive. We are not safe until we are all vaccinated. Let’s unite to vaccinate the Western Cape!”
Elderly resident Jan Claasen, aged 60-year-old, says he is excited to receive his COVID-19 vaccination. Mr Claassen was assisted with registration by a community healthcare worker.
“I am ready to get my vaccine. I know that taking it can help to protect me from virus. I am happy that we were helped today.”
Eva and Esau Moses have been married for 42 years and the couple opted to register for vaccination. The couple was assisted by Dr Mbombo during the registration drive.
“I want to be vaccinated because I know it can prevent me from becoming very sick. As a farming community member, it’s good to receive support with the registration.”
More community drives are expected as healthcare workers gear up to vaccinate elderly residents across the province.
The vaccination awareness drive was done in collaboration with community healthcare workers from Elsies River-based NGO Tehillah Community Collaborative and Tygerberg Hospice. The community healthcare workers have been on the frontlines since the start of the pandemic. Western Cape Government Health thanks all our community healthcare heroes for their dedication to bringing healthcare to the doorsteps of vulnerable residents.
The Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS) is now available to all citizens aged 60 years and above are invited to register for vaccination. If you’d like to register yourself or a loved one for vaccination, follow the steps below:
How to register for the Coronavirus vaccine:
