Temporary closure on Old Malmesbury Road

30 August 2016

The Kalbaskraal railway crossing on Old Malmesbury Road will be closed this weekend between 8am on Saturday, 3 September until 6pm on Sunday, 4 September 2016. This planned closure forms part of the R104 million Department of Transport and Public Works project to rehabilitate a 16 km stretch of the Old Malmesbury Road between Abbotsdale and Kalbaskraal. Repair work will also be done on bridges, culverts and side drains.

While the crossing is closed, Transnet will be working on the railway line and the Department on the approach roads. Local residents will be able to travel through Kalbaskraal along a detour, and it is recommended that other motorists use the N7.

Work on the project began in September 2015 and is scheduled for completion in July 2017. A total of 12% of the total value of the contract will be spent on targeted enterprises and 12 000 person-days of work will be created for people from the Swartland municipal area.

The Department is aware that roadworks frustrate motorists, but takes all possible steps to minimise inconvenience. Once the project is completed, the 2 900 vehicles using this road every week will greatly benefit from improved travelling conditions.
