Stars to shine at the 2014 National Netball Championships

13 August 2014

A total of 44 teams from 41 districts will be participating in the Spar National Netball Championships taking place in the Bellville Velodrome from 10 August to 16 August 2014. Players will be hoping to catch the attention of the selectors of the Spar Proteas (the national team) and the Spar Baby Proteas (the national junior team). The event has been organised by the Western Province Netball Union in partnership with Spar and a host of other sponsors.

Speaking at the opening event, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Nomafrench Mbombo said the competition would give players on all levels a chance to do what they love. “I would like to remind you that team work is key,” she said. “A team that plays together is a far stronger. Play hard, hone your skills and learn as much as possible.”

President of the Western Province Netball Federation Marsha Wagenaar welcomed the teams to Cape Town. “Be embraced by the cultural warmth of the Mother City,” she said.

President of Netball South Africa Mimi Mthethwa reminded the players that they should try their best to try to impress the national selectors in the crowd.
