Speedy resolution of flight delays at CT International Airport anticipated

22 October 2019

[Joint statement by David Maynier and James Vos]

Earlier today we were informed of the delay of flights at Cape Town International airport due to the grounding of several aircraft by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA).

We have since visited the airport to assess the situation on the ground. We visited the emergency control centre, met with management and support staff.

The relevant authorities at Cape Town International Airport have informed us that the planes were grounded following a notice issued by SACAA relating to irregularities found during an audit of the maintenance and technical service provider.

The team at Cape Town International Airport are doing everything they can to mitigate the impact the delayed flights will have on customers intending to travel from the airport today, and they anticipate that the situation will be stabilised by tomorrow morning.

Cape Town International Airport are implementing contingency plans and they have informed us that passengers who were scheduled to travel on the grounded flights are being accommodated on alternative flights.

Our visit today confirmed that even during a major challenge Cape Town International Airport is excellently managed, living up to its world-class reputation.

We will be monitoring this situation closely to ensure that the impact on travellers is limited and that the matter is resolved speedily to ensure we remain open for business in the Western Cape.
