Sixteen Road Traffic Fatalities on Western Cape Roads

Between 18 and 20 September 2015, Western Cape Provincial Traffic Services stopped a total of 2 506 vehicles in 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the province. Sixteen road users died on the province’s roads over the weekend.

A total of 1 341 drivers were screened for being under the influence of alcohol and 29 arrests were made.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Vredenburg. At 1.08 mg of alcohol/ 1 000 ml of blood, this is four times the legal limit of 0,24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 9 307 vehicles were screened for speeding and 925 speeding offences were recorded. A total of 326 fines in the amount of R463 150 were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver fitness to vehicle fitness infringements of the law.

The highest recorded speeds were:

  • 163 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 172 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N1 in the Worcester service area.
  • 100 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N2 in the Somerset West service area.

Three other arrests were made:

  • One for excessive speed in Swellendam.
  • Two in connection with impoundments in Mossel Bay.

Friday, 18 September

Cape Metropole:

  • Mitchells Plain – 1 pedestrian.
  • Observatory – 1 pedestrian.

Eden:

  • George – 2 drivers and 1 passenger.

Cape Winelands

  • Prince Alfred Hamlet – 1 driver.

Saturday, 19 September

Cape Metropole:

  • Bellville – 1 driver.
  • Philippi East – 1 pedestrian.

West Coast:

  • Saldanha – 1 driver.
  • Vredendal – 1 passenger.

Sunday, 20 September

Cape Metropole:

  • Observatory – 1 pedestrian.
  • Manenberg - 1 passenger.
  • Macassar – 1 other.

Cape Winelands:

  • De Doorns – 1 pedestrian.
  • Rawsonville – 2 passengers.
