Road safety education in Khayelitsha

The Department of Transport and Public Works Road Safety Management (RSM) unit and the City of Cape Town’s Traffic Services engaged with drivers, passengers and pedestrians on road safety issues at Site C Taxi Rank, Khayelitsha on Wednesday, 14 October 2020.

This intervention is one of RSM’s interventions that have been identified for Transport Month 2020.  October is marked as Transport Month in South Africa.  To observe and advance South Africa’s road safety initiatives is one of Transport Month’s objectives.

The main aim of this intervention was to engage with the taxi drivers, passengers and pedestrians on road safety issues.

RSM’s Al-Ameen Kafaar said the event gave government the opportunity to educate drivers and the public about road safety, particularly pedestrian deaths.  He said about 60% of people who died in road crashes since 1 January 2020 until 30 September 2020 were pedestrians.

We aim to reduce the amount of people injured and killed on the Western Cape’s roads through road safety awareness and education campaigns and programmes.

CODETA spokesperson Besuthu Ndungane welcomed the initiative and requested that similar interventions be held at other taxi ranks in the Metro.
