Road Conditions on All Major Roads in the Western Cape are Safe and Open for Traffic

15 July 2012

The only exception is the Swartberg Pass, between Oudtshoorn and Prince Albert, which is still closed due to snowfalls. The road in the Swartberg Pass is a gravel road and is not a major traffic route. A date for its opening has not been set and will largely depend on weather conditions.

The inclement and heavy weather did not cause any significant road infrastructure damage.

The debris on the N2 in Sir Lowry's Pass near Somerset West caused by rock falls has not been removed yet. The boulders are too big to be removed by conventional methods. That part of the N2 has been cordoned off. There is normal traffic flow on the rest of the N2.

The South African National Road Agency Limited, SANRAL, maintains the country's national roads. The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works' district engineering maintains other major roads in the Cape Winelands, Central Karoo and Overberg districts. The following major routes and passes in the province have been cleared for traffic flow:

  • N1 - Cape Town to Beaufort West.
  • N2 - Cape Town to Storms River.
  • N7 - Cape Town to van Rhynsdorp.
  • Route 62 (Worcester/Oudtshoorn/Uniondale).
  • Du Toitskloof Pass (Between Paarl and Worcester).
  • Mitchell's Pass (Near Ceres).
  • Meiringspoort (Between Beaufort West and Oudtshoorn).
  • Mossel Bay/Oudtshoorn Pass.
