Eleven people were killed on Western Cape roads on 7 and 8 November 2014. Six were pedestrians, two drivers of vehicles, two were cyclists and one was a passenger.
This weekend’s 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the province saw 2 581 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign.
A total of 1 143 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 34 arrests.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Beaufort West at 1.48 mg/1 000 ml, which was six times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.
A total 15 890 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 1 178 speeding offences were recorded. Two hundred and twenty one (221) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 294 150, 00.
