Rehabilitation on the R43 between Worcester and Wyzersdrift

11 June 2015

The Department of Transport and Public Works has started with the rehabilitation of Main Road 298 on the Route 43 between Worcester and Wyzersdrift.

The project will include the widening of the Breede River Bridge and the repair of other structures along the section of the road. The estimated contract value is R227 million and the project is expected to be completed towards the end of 2017.

General traffic accommodation

Two-way traffic will be maintained at all times in the urban area of Rawsonville, with safe pedestrian access to businesses. There will be half-width construction in other areas with Stop/Go operations during the day and a traffic light system at night.

Possible delays

Motorists could expect weather-related delays during winter.

Economic impact and job creation

A significant amount of employment opportunities, quantified as 50 000 person days, will be created for people located within the boundaries of the Breede Valley region. Thirty percent of the contract value is expected to go towards targeted enterprises within the Cape Winelands District Municipality.
