Provincial Minister Awards Employees for Forty Years Service

16 September 2010

Today, three hundred and thirty five (235) employees of the Western Cape Department of Health were acknowledged for twenty (20), thirty (30) and forty (40) years of service. Six (6) of them have been working at provincial health facilities for forty (40) years.

The award function was for employees working at district hospitals and clinics in the Cape Metropole, comprising five thousand and thirty eight (5038) staff members. The majority of the recipients (104) were nurses, with ninety four (94) medical and health care workers and thirty seven (37) administration staff.

In his address provincial health minister Theuns Botha said it is remarkable to award six (6) staff members for forty (40) years of dedication, fifty two (52) for thirty (30) years of service and one hundred and seventy seven (177) for twenty (20) years. "I am increasingly impressed with the dedication that I see in this department. During the past public servant's strike we could report a less than zero point one percent (0.1%) strike number. That made me very proud," said Botha. He stressed that in his view it is very important that staff is acknowledged and rewarded for their services.

The largest part of the staff component of the Western Cape Department of Health comprises nurses (42%), while doctors comprise eight percent (8%). The composition of the balance is as follows:

  • Administration thirty six percent (36%)
  • Emergency Services five percent (5%)
  • Therapists and related services four point five percent (4.5%)
  • Pharmaceutical two percent (2%)
  • Engineers zero point eight percent (0.8%)
  • Social services zero point five percent (0.5%)
  • Dentistry zero point two percent (0.2%)
