Minister Sileku welcomes PRASA’s service improvements on the Malmesbury Line

Western Cape Minister of Mobility, Isaac Sileku, has welcomed the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) Western Cape’s announcement of new service improvements for the Malmesbury line, effective from 4 May 2026, aimed at providing faster travel times and a more reliable schedule for residents.

A key change is the introduction of an express service through Eikenfontein Station, designed to reduce overcrowding and improving service reliability.

Minister Sileku said these improvements also form part of the Western Cape Government’s broader plan to fully restore passenger rail as the backbone of public transport in the province.

“This initiative supports our vision of an integrated public transport network where high-capacity rail is supported by reliable bus services, a safer and more professional minibus taxi industry, e-hailing services, and safe walking and cycling options.”

The Western Cape Mobility Department remains committed to working with PRASA Western Cape to support continued rail recovery across the province.

“Better passenger flow and more reliable services are essential to ensuring passenger rail remains a practical and dignified option. We will closely monitor the impact of these changes to ensure they meet the needs of residents and strengthen our province’s integrated public transport system.”
